In 2022, Angela and Meghan realized that their book club was spending more time talking about politics than books. Roe v Wade had just been overturned and they were all livid. More than that, they wanted to do something.
At the time, far-right politician Doug Mastriano was running for Governor of Pennsylvania. Angela, Meghan, and six of their book club friends began protesting outside his office. By the time the election came around, that number had grown to fifty people! And thankfully, Democrat Josh Shapiro was elected Governor instead.
Angela and Meghan never set out to organize something huge or make a big difference; they just knew that getting together with other women (and maybe drinking a little wine!) had led to conversations about their community and their values. And those conversations led naturally into action.
Suddenly, their book club had become something far greater.
Don’t get us wrong, we love books here at Red Wine & Blue! We just released our Holiday Gift Guide full of banned books and we even host a monthly virtual book club.
But whether it’s a book club or a “bookless club,” the magic lies in getting together with friends and neighbors and talking about the issues that matter to you. Who knows, you might just start a movement.
