How To Navigate The Holidays with MAGA Relatives

A few tips from Red Wine & Blue

Thanksgiving is almost here, and we all know what that means… political debates with your MAGA relatives. If you’re already feeling the pressure, you’re not alone!

Last week, Red Wine & Blue held a virtual event with experts like pod favorite Jess McIntosh and therapist Rebecca Freking. They shared practical tips on how to navigate tricky family discussions and keep things civil (or at least manageable). If you missed the event, we’re publishing it on today’s Suburban Women Problem podcast feed.

Whether you’re dealing with an uncle who has gone full-on QAnon or a mom who believes mass deportations are more important than your reproductive freedom, here are some ways to stay sane this holiday season. Choose the option that’s right for you.

  1. I just can’t go there right now.

It’s okay to set boundaries for your own mental health. Be clear with family members if you don’t want to engage in political talk. But remember, it’s up to you to hold the boundary. If they veer into unwelcome territory, change the subject or walk away. You may also consider enlisting a family member as an ally beforehand, who can keep an eye out and step in if needed.

  2. I want to understand.

Ask questions from a place of curiosity, not judgment. Let your loved one know that you’re trying to understand them better. You can be an active listener without agreeing with them. You gain perspective, and your family member understands that you are someone they can go to without judgment in the future. When they start questioning some of what they’ve heard, they’ll know who to turn to.

  3. I want my family to know that I’m in the fight and why.

Tell your family members why you voted the way you did. Make it clear that not only will you continue to fight for your own rights, but you will continue to fight for their rights too, regardless of how they voted. “I’ll keep fighting for you no matter how you voted” is an excellent way to end a conversation.

And if you need a respite from holiday gatherings, sign up for one of our events and come hang out with us! We’ll lift you up and have a little fun too.
