This week we chatted with Tayhlor Coleman, a seventh-generation Texan, vanlifer, and voting rights advocate. After working for dozens of campaigns and causes across the country, she moved back to her home state of Texas with the goal to get certified to register voters in each of the state's 254 counties. She fully converted her van ‘Barb’ (named for Barbara Jordan) into a tiny home and voter registration mobile on wheels.
Listen to her story in today’s podcast episode and you can follow her adventures on instagram at @tayhlorcoleman.
Tayhlor talks about how the entry level into politics is at the local level and we couldn’t agree more. Last year, Red Wine & Blue launched the Freedom to Parent campaign, a movement of mainstream moms (and dads) who are standing up for our freedom to decide what’s best for our kids, ensure their safety, and set them up for success.
One way we can fight for our children’s future is by voting in local elections. Tayhlor shared with us that she has a lot more success convincing people who have not voted before that they can make a much bigger impact in the day-to-day life of their kids, the people they love, and their community by voting in the small races they’ve never even thought about.
Paying attention to school board races is a good start. And if you’re wondering what the heck school board members do - watch this training. Red Wine & Blue teamed up with School Board School to discuss what decisions they make and how they impact our kids.
Like Tayhlor said in today’s podcast episode, when you can connect the dots for people and show them exactly how local elections impact their everyday lives, they will become more engaged and vote. And once people vote the first time, Tayhlor has seen that they are more likely to vote again in the future.
So how are you going to stay engaged this year at the local level? Tell us in the comments!
Ciao from Democrats Abroad Italy! I love the work you're doing and have been following the podcast forever! I just wanted to remind all of your followers that US citizens living or studying abroad can vote! And in many cases, we can vote down ballot! There are 6.5 million US citizens eligible to vote living overseas - our votes can be the margin of victory in tight races. If you know anyone living or studying abroad, send them to https://votefromabroad.org to register and request their overseas absentee ballot. The process takes just minutes and, in most cases, can be completed on a smartphone!
Ya Know! Ya Know!! Ya Know!! I am sure that there were a lot of very important information and ideas voiced on this episode, but all I heard was "ya know"
