Make Hope Possible, Not Despair Convincing

Wise words from Connie Schultz

On this week’s pod, our guest Connie Schultz shared her feelings about last Tuesday’s election. Of course she was disappointed, even angry, about Trump winning and her husband Sherrod losing his Senate race in Ohio.

But then, she felt something else: empowerment. She and Sherrod will continue to work hard for their community, now free of the constraints of a Senate campaign. They’ll continue to comfort and inspire others and protect those who will need protecting in this admittedly scary new era.

More than that, she reiterated something that we’ve heard from many wise leaders in the past week. Hope is not just an emotion - it’s a strategy. Connie shared with us one of her favorite quotes, by the writer Raymond Williams: “To be truly radical is to make hope possible rather than despair convincing.”

Too many Americans didn’t see our vision for a just and equitable country. They didn’t feel our hope for a brighter future. We can spend time being angry at them, or we can keep trying to share our vision. How we talk to the people around us has real power. We can share radical hope, or we can convince them to choose despair.

Here at Red Wine & Blue, we choose hope.
