It’s National Voter Registration Day! So we put together a first-time voter checklist to share with the people in your life. This upcoming election is one of the most important elections of our time. It’s so important that we all vote and that we talk to our friends and family about the importance of voting.
Step 1: Register to Vote
Do you know someone who is turning 18 before the election? Several states allow you to pre-register to vote if you will be 18 before the election. Learn more about your state’s rules, find upcoming election dates, and register to vote on your state’s election website. Or visit vote.gov for more information.
Step 2: Find Your Polling Place
Your polling place is where you go to cast your vote. Find out where yours is located and its hours by checking your voter registration. If you try to vote somewhere other than your assigned location, you may have to cast a provisional ballot, and your vote may not count. If you are in line when the polling place closes, make sure you stay in line and complete your vote. This is your right to vote!
Step 3: Learn about your Ballot
Learn about the ballot measures and where candidates running for office in your area stand on the issues that matter most to you. Many election offices post sample ballots online. Check your state’s election website for more information.
Step 4: Check I.D. Requirements
Each state sets its own voter I.D. rules. In most states, you must bring your government issued identification to vote in person and provide I.D. information when you vote by mail. Check your state’s election website for voter I.D. requirements.
Step 5: Vote
Some states conduct elections entirely by mail, and others allow you to ask for an absentee ballot if you’re unable to vote in person, or prefer to vote by mail. Some states also have early voting options. Each state has its own guidelines, so check your state’s election website for those deadlines and requirements.
If you live in one of our five target states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia and North Carolina, you can visit our voter guides for more information about the upcoming election and ballot in your state! Just click on your state.
