We’re back with News Stories! We were really hoping that after the election it would be good news from here on out but we all know that isn’t the case. It’s important to take a step back from the news when you need to recharge but it’s also important not to completely disengage. It’s going to be a long four years and it’s going to take all of us to continue to work to build the more perfect union we all deserve. That starts with staying in the know. So here are three stories you need to know about this week.
Supreme Court seems likely to uphold ban on gender-affirming care
The SWP Take: We know that medical authorities in the U.S. largely agree that treatments like puberty blockers and hormone therapy are safe so it’s disappointing that court's conservative justices are indicating they do not want to overrule state laws banning them for children. This case matters because 26 states have passed bans on gender-affirming care, and a ruling in Tennessee's favor could persuade more to do so, with major implications for trans youths.
Activists Occupied Bathrooms in the US Capitol to Protest the Trans Ban
The SWP Take: This is what good trouble looks like. Raquel Willis, co-founder of Gender Liberation Movement and one of the organizers of the demonstration summed it up best when she said, “It was important to show up in a radically defiant way and let the world know, and let our electeds know, that we are not going to allow this disrespect and this disregard for our lives.”
Republicans don't care if women die from abortion bans — but they don't want you to know about it
The SWP Take: This is exactly why we have to keep sharing our stories. We will not be erased. We know that abortion bans kill women. It has never been about pro-life. It’s about controlling women. So we will continue to tell the stories of our sisters, friends, neighbors and ourselves until the rights we deserve are restored.
