Here are three news stories you need to know about this week.
Abortion Bans linked to people moving out of state, study finds
The SWP Take: This is the least surprising news that could come out of extreme abortion bans. Of course people, especially younger Americans, would prefer to live in a state where they have access to full reproductive healthcare. As the study mentions, this will hurt the economy of these states as young workers continue to leave for states with more progressive values.
Judge Rejects Biden’s Title IX Rules, Scrapping Protections for Trans Students
The SWP Take: Earlier this year the Biden administration attempted to update Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in public education and sports. The update prohibited schools and school staff from ignoring a student’s preferred gender identity. A federal judge in Kentucky struck down this rule, stating that it violated teacher’s rights to require them to use a requested pronoun for students. This is a very scary time for LGBTQ+ students and their families as a new conservative majority takes over our government. We will continue to work for the rights of all LGBTQ+ people.
Idaho Republicans want the Supreme Court to reverse its Same-Sex Marriage Ruling
The SWP Take: Are we really questioning same-sex marriage in 2025? Is that where we are as a nation? The majority of Americans overwhelmingly support same-sex marriage, but we should note that Justice Alito and Justice Thomas have both shown interest in re-visiting the 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage across the country. We now have a much more conservative Supreme Court than we had in 2015. We will be keeping an eye on this situation.
