We know it’s been a tough couple of weeks since Trump was inaugurated. With breaking news happening every hour, it’s been hard to keep up on on the news. So here are three news stories you need to know about this week.
Trump is attacking DEI. Big businesses believe DEI is valuable
The SWP Take: Everywhere you look Trump and his cronies are yelling about DEI, but the truth is that most people, including those in leadership, don’t even know what DEI means. But here’s the thing, big business does know about DEI and from their own experience, they know that DEI policies are good for business. For businesses, DEI means expanding your hiring pool, which results in finding even more qualified candidates. DEI boosts profits, reduces employee attrition and increases employee motivation and moral. That sounds like a win-win for big business and American employees.
Trump’s immigration policy is already terrifying America’s kids
The SWP Take: Did you know that all children in America, regardless of their immigration status, have the right to receive a public education? On top of all the other pressures that our kids are experiencing in schools including school shootings, pandemic closures and set backs, it is not okay that children are now afraid to go to school for fear of ICE raids. These kids deserve an education in a place where they feel safe to learn and grow.
A new Supreme Court case would force the government to create religious public schools
The SWP Take: We are keeping an eye on this Supreme Court case and how it will affect the separation of church and state. The State Supreme Court in Oklahoma already ruled that using state funds for these Catholic schools was unconstitutional, but the federal Supreme Court has shown itself to be open to the idea of public funds being used more widely for religious instruction. This case could have huge ramifications for public school funding and the separation of church and state.
