After hundreds of LGBTQ+ books tossed, library dean at Florida college placed on leave

The SWP Take: Following Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's takeover, New College of Florida has trashed hundreds of books on LGBTQ+ issues, race, and women's rights. The college claims this action is part of their regular weeding process to ensure that materials align with the needs of students and faculty. This incited immediate backlash and widespread media coverage and now Shannon Hausinger, New College of Florida's dean of the library, has been placed on administrative leave. This is just another example of why we need to hold our leaders accountable. We are the majority.

In narrow ruling, Arkansas Supreme Court keeps abortion off the ballot

The SWP Take: It’s maddening and heartbreaking that an abortion access measure won’t be on the ballot this fall, but that doesn’t mean Arkansans don’t get to vote on the issue. Abortion will still be on the ballot, even though it’s not directly listed in Arkansas. Harris and Walz have promised to restore reproductive rights nationwide. Keeping the Senate and flipping the House will help them do this. Voting all the way down the ballot for candidates who want to protect reproductive rights is what we all need to do in November.

Gun violence among top issues in DNC Platform

The SWP Take: It’s about damn time. After all, firearms are the leading cause of death for American children and teens. We applaud Vice President Harris for saying that "We who believe that every person should have the freedom to live safe from the terror of gun violence will finally pass red flag laws, universal background checks and an assault weapons ban," at her first presidential campaign rally in Milwaukee. We want an administration who will make gun control a top priority.
