Book ban attempts reached historic high last year, library association says
The SWP take: If you thought book bans were at their all time high in the 1950s, you're wrong. Turns out book bans were at an all time high in 2023 with 4,240 different titles challenged in libraries and schools. We all need to stand against censorship by raising awareness, supporting libraries, and taking action against restrictions. Every voice deserves to be heard and every story deserves to be told.
In states with laws targeting LGBTQ issues, school hate crimes quadrupled
The SWP take: It comes as no surprise that when the government targets the LGBTQ community, kids at school start paying the price with more hate crimes. This is one of the many reasons why the extremist attacks and targeting of the LGBTQ community are so dangerous for our communities, our schools and our children.
The SWP take: Michele Morrow has no business overseeing North Carolina’s public schools and its $11 billion budget. She doesn’t even send her own kids to public school. She’s never taught in a public school or been employed as a faculty member. She has called public schools “leftist indoctrination centers that must be destroyed”. North Carolina’s 1.3 million school children deserve to have someone running their schools who actually believes in public education.
