Republicans are trying to steal an election

But it's not the one you might think

There’s a lot of news right now, and it’s easy to miss some of the things going on in our states and at the local level. In fact, a lot of the chaos we are experiencing is intended to make us turn away and stop paying attention. But we won’t be fooled.

In North Carolina, Republicans are trying to steal votes from the November election. Democratic Justice Allison Riggs won her election to keep her seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court by 734 votes but her opponent, Republican Judge Jefferson Griffin refuses to concede. Griffin wants 60,000 votes thrown out, claiming that voter registration forms were not completed correctly. Despite the fact that the State Board of Elections confirmed the forms were correct, Griffin has bypassed the local court, and gone straight to the state Supreme Court, which is controlled by Republicans. Griffin is asking the state court to throw out the ballots and overturn the election results. Simultaneously, Griffin is also working through the Federal Court of Appeals, hoping to find a court sympathetic to his views.

These are 60,000 North Carolinians whose votes may be disregarded simply because one candidate was unwilling to accept the results of a free and fair election.

So what can we do?

  1. If you vote in North Carolina, check the status of your November ballot. You can confirm that your name is not on the list here.

  2. If you know anyone in North Carolina, share this information with them so they can check the status of their November ballot.

  3. If your name is on the list, make sure to share your story far and wide. We can help connect you with organizations collecting stories.

  4. No matter where you live, you can support the efforts to protect these votes today, Tuesday January 14 as volunteers in Raleigh read all 60,000 names in front of the state capitol. You can join in person between 6am and 11pm or watch online.

  5. Continue to watch this story. Yesterday a North Carolina judge refused to throw out the 60,000 ballots in question, but that is only one case in this complicated story. There are still more cases to be heard at both the state and federal level.

  6. If you live in North Carolina and want to connect with our on-the-ground organizers, reply to this post and we will connect you!

Let’s make our voices heard. A democracy cannot stand for disenfranchising 60,000 voters after an election. Together we can make sure everyone in North Carolina checks their ballot, and tells the state Supreme Court that this is not okay.
