This week, Democrat Marilyn Lands won her special election for a seat in the Alabama State House. And she didn’t just win - she won by twenty-five points, in a suburban district that Donald Trump won in 2016 and 2020.
How did she do it? By talking to voters about IVF and abortion.
Her victory is yet another example of voters’ clear priorities: when we’re given the choice between extremism and reproductive freedom, we choose freedom every time. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, we’ve been speaking out—in our group texts, at the bus stop, and at the ballot box—and telling Republicans to stay out of our personal healthcare decisions.
This win is exactly what the GOP fears. Because as Red Wine & Blue founder Katie Paris put it, “It’s not just Alabama. There are Marilyns all over the country.”
I still laugh when the GOP said women would "forget" about the dobbs decision in the midterms. How'd that work out? How's it STILL working out? This is what happens when callus men underestimate the collective rage and power of women.
