Welcome to The Suburban Women Problem!
“We’ve got to address the suburban women problem, because it’s real.”
That’s what Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Fox News in 2018 after the network projected that Democrats would take the House. He was right then and it’s still true today.
The Republican party consistently does poorly with suburban women because they don’t listen to us. And that’s why we started The Suburban Women Problem, a podcast from Red Wine & Blue. We want our voices to be heard.
Meet our hosts.
Rachel Vindman thought she’d be a card-carrying member of the GOP forever, until President Trump called her husband a traitor.
Microbiologist Jasmine Clark never dreamed of running for office, but then 2016 happened. Now she’s the first Black woman ever elected to represent her suburban district.
US Air Force Veteran turned economist, Amanda Weinstein used to listen to Focus on the Family and lecture her peers about abortion, until she couldn’t reconcile her faith with today’s GOP.
Each week they cover a variety of topics that matter to suburban women like the future of women’s healthcare, book bans, attacks on public education, gun violence and school safety, and threats to our democracy.
Today’s episode features a conversation with Laura Pappano, the author of a new book called "School Moms: Parent Activism, Partisan Politics, and the Battle for Public Education.”
Laura talks about how inclusion has become a political issue and how the right treats belonging like a political statement. But we know, inclusion benefits everyone and shouldn’t be made a political issue.
Laura attended the Moms for Liberty National Summit held in Philadelphia and was STUNNED by the extremist language used throughout the conference. She said the whole conference felt like a scripted performance. The leaders of the group stressed that children in public schools are in danger.
And we’re all wondering in danger of what? Empathy? Inclusiveness? Belonging?
There is a battle for the future of our public schools and conversations like the one in this episode are important to keep having with everyone you know. Let us know in the comments, what can we all do to make sure being inclusive is normal in schools, and not part of a culture war.
Listen and subscribe to The Suburban Women Problem wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes are available every Wednesday.
