Who are the Exvangelicals?

A generation of evangelicals are growing up and fleeing the fold

This week, we were joined by NPR journalist Sarah McCammon to talk about her new book The Exvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church.

If the evangelical support of Trump has confused you, you’re not alone. How could a man whose words and actions are the opposite of evangelical ideals become their hero and champion? The math just doesn’t add up.

But it’s not only those outside of the church who see those contradictions. There’s a growing movement of evangelicals who are leaving the fold - including Sarah herself, along with our co-host Amanda Weinstein. Both Sarah and Amanda’s break with the evangelical church came before Trump hit the scene in 2015, but their journey mirrors that of many evangelicals who have left the church in recent years.

It’s like we always say on The Suburban Women Problem: it’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to learn and grow. It’s rarely easy, but following your true values is always worth it.
